Handbook of Festivals - 2nd Call for Expressions of Interest for Book Chapters

Festivals are of enormous significance to many communities around the world. They can have historic, religious, cultural and traditional significance, and are also important parts of community building. At the same time, local authorities are increasingly relying on new and existing festivals to become visitor attractions and thus generate economic impact. This is leading to a number of debates and controversies, to be explore by this Handbook.

Topics to be covered include (but are not limited to):

Festivals and sustainability (including economic; socio-cultural; environmental)

Strategic use of festivals (including festivals as a tourism development strategy; legacy; festivals and urban/rural redevelopment; festivals and government/policy; valuing festivals)

Festivals and communities (social cohesion; social inclusion/exclusion; social justice; quality of life and wellbeing; community pride/belonging)

Festival management (including stakeholders; success/failure; risk/crisis; human resources/volunteering)

Festival marketing (including consumer behaviour; experiential marketing; festivals and social media; branding)

Methodological approaches to researching festivals

Different types of festivals (arts/culture; food & wine; religious/spiritual; multicultural; film/media; regional/national; traditional/folk/indigenous)

Different cultural perspectives on festivals (work from China, India, SE Asia, Latin/South America and Africa in particular)

Future Directions for festivals (including climate change; population growth; generational changes; technological developments)

Chapters will either be discursive and reflective pieces or discussions of original empirical work.

The approximate timeline is as follows:

Submission of expressions of interest: 28th February 2017

Notifications to authors: 30th March 2017

Submission of full chapters: 31st July 2017

Publication date: 2018

If you are interested in contributing to this Handbook, please send your expression of interest in the form of a 300 – 500 word abstract/summary of your proposed chapter along with the names and affiliations of all authors.
